Song info

“Half-Hearted Stab” was a SongFight! title in the summer off 2006. I was finishing up my masters degree and starting to relax after a very stressful year. I had a lot of pent-up creativity. I entered this fight and “Had it Up to Here” in consecutive weeks and finished both songs quickly. This one was the quickest: I wrote and recorded the SF! version in two hours and fifteen minutes.

I was pretty happy with the song and the character of the narrator (yes, alas, this one is fiction). The biggest problem was with the bridge - it sucked out too much energy to just stop and go piano/vocal held chords. I liked the idea of going into a triple meter. For some reason I had been thinking of a very old song I wrote when I was in high school. It featured a faux-acoustic intro with fiddle, mandolin, and probably acoustic bass or something like that. I’d also been using the tuba patch you hear in this song in The Who’s Tommy (I play it with my left hand for “Tommy’s Holiday Camp”). Add all of that together and you get the new bridge.

Lyrics

I already know which bridge I’d throw your body off
I already have my leather gloves picked out
I’ve written one too many angry entries in my blog
for you to find and guess who they’re about

You don’t think I have it in me
You think I’ll keep payin’ your tab
You just try ordering that lobster tonight
and I’ll muster up my half-hearted stab
all it takes is a half-hearted stab

I already know I’ll do it when you’re sleeping
It’s the only time you want me anyway
I’ll wait until the moon is full like in that anime
I watched while you out there getting laid

You assume I’ll just stay in my room
I’d argue but you would just laugh
You’ll just keep on cutting my heart into pieces
Well look out, cos all I really need is half
