Song info
“Had it Up to Here” was a SongFight! title in the summer of 2006. The song practically poured out of me as soon as I saw the title and decided I’d approach it from the standpoint of “up to here” being directional (north). A close acquaintance had recently got divorced, and I think I channeled that into the song. The ending solo is catharsis. After coming to the realization the narrator comes to, what can you do but just freak out and start over? And that’s what the song does.
Lyrics
Friday was raining, we walked down the strip as it gleamed
The chapels had Saturday specials so we said our vows
Sunday the highway, North for the border
Bought smokes with our dollars, called home with our quarters
and we got so close
Oh Canada
We had it up to here
Damn Idaho, I didn’t know
How fast things could change
It had seemed so clear
But all through Montana
We sang “Old Susanna”
and “Home on the Range”
And I just wanna go home now
Faster and faster we careened through the desert in a race
gainst time and our doubts and the look on your face
You just laughed and burned until I couldn’t see anymore
Deep down I think we knew but how could we explain
Just wash it down with a glass of champagne
Spit it into the wind like we didn’t care anymore
Oh Canada
