Song info

This was the last song written for M&P. I was enamored with the 80’s-sounding synth pad you hear in the choruses, and matched it up with the chorus chord progression that had been floating along in my head for a few days. They ended up working well together.

When I first wrote the song, the chorus sections were in straight 4/4 time. It was frustrating me, though, because I felt that the way the melody and lyrics wanted to go wasn’t fitting well with the time signature: there’d be a gap at the end of a line, or they’d run together. So I took the same tack I did with Fire. I just played and sang the chorus the way I felt it should sound and changed the time signature to fit. It ended up being mostly 4/4 or with a few extra beats (7/4) thrown in here and there.

Lyrics

Chorus:
Lover, keep our bed warm
Princess, when this wave crests I’ll break at the seams
In all my dreams I never have to choose
‘Cause I can’t live without both of you

I finally built my schoolhouse with a view of the sea
The kids throw rocks over the edge and that’s the mark I’m gonna leave

But I would find my old lover in the waves and leave this legacy to fate
when the storm stirs up the whitecaps
I still hear her calling, I still feel her lips when I kiss yours

(Chorus)

I’ve seen a hundred hungry faces and I’ve lifted up my hands
In Her Majesty’s good graces I’ll pour out the sands
and let my balloon fly away
high above the rocks where my princess waits
I will shine my brightest in moments, forget where I’m going,
and watch as my mark slips away

There must be a way — some common ground
You lift her up, you hold her down
There must be more than just these rocks, this pull, these ties I’ve broken
I’ve so messed this up, I summoned sirens and spent a decade wrecking ships
We could have sailed and found a harbor but the words caught on my lips

Believe me good intentions are comfort colder than this wind that blows me over and over

(Chorus)
