I wrote this song for Alaska’s Kit, who will undoubtedly sing it much prettier than me. It’s from an Alaskan girl’s perspective, sung to a boy who just said something stupid and took her for granted. I was inspired by the “Alaska Girls Kick Ass” bumper stickers and the thought of girls I know growing up Alaskan.

Check out the guitars! I’ve been learning for about nine months and am getting comfortable enough to put them in my recordings. There is, in fact, no piano in this song at all! Cats and dogs living together, etc.

I heard there was this hot new search engine that’s come along to dethrone Google. So of course I ego search my name. It works but, um, WHO IS THAT GUY?!

According to Cuil’s site, they select pictures from your site to put with search results. The algorithm’s not working, guys.

Ah, life on the internet.

In other news, Magellan & Pele is now available at Capital Records in downtown Juneau. Any of you local yokels who haven’t picked it up can do so there!

Well, that was fun! My voice held up (I had been sick the days before), the band sounded great, lots of nice people came, and I sold some CDs. It was a very good time. Thanks to all of you who came out to see us. Here’s the set list:

Friday afternoon before the concert I was on KTOO radio’s Juneau Afternoon with Jeff Brown. Jeff played a couple tracks from the CD and interviewed me about my musical upbringing, songwriting process, and the CD. You can listen to the stream at KTOO’s site.

I also finally updated the site so all of the songs on Magellan & Pele have lyrics up. Many of them also have background info and demo clips, so check those out if you’re curious.

My plans for the future include finishing writing a bunch of song-pieces I have laying around. After this week the holiday concert season (and thus stressful crunch time at work) will have passed, so maybe I’ll get a chance to do that sooner than later.

CD release Nov. 30

8 PM, the Canvas gallery, pay-what-you-want, CDs available for $7.

Rehearsals are going great. It’s a blast to play with the guys again, “the guys” being Simon on bass, Dale on drums, and Darin on guitar.

The songs are taking on new lives with the live arrangement. It’s a lot of fun to hear them with a little breathing space and stripped-down arrangements after getting so used to the CD versions. And for the first time in a long time there will be guitar on some Mike Maas songs! Cue the plagues and rivers of blood. A couple of the synthier songs on the CD are going to be rockier live.

Of course, I write this as though people have heard the CD, which most haven’t, considering I never really promoted it. So I’m looking forward to introducing people to my labors. It should be a good time, hope to see you there.

Rory Stitt’s Requiem, future concert

This Friday I emerge from my musical hibernation to play percussion in Rory Stitt’s Requiem. Northern Light church, 8 PM, suggested donation $10. I get to wail on a big bass drum. Much fun.

I’m also planning to finally celebrate the completion of Magellan & Pele with a concert later this month, penciled in for Nov. 30th at the Canvas. More on that soon, hopefully.
